Have you wondered why milk tea, iced coffee, and boba drinks taste better when you go out to the tea house and buy them?

I mean, much better than average. It’s like the milk base has something different about it, rather than just being plain milk.

Well, it’s not plain milk, that’s why!

I often go to the tea houses in Los Angeles, all over, and love milk tea drinks. The best ones have homemade boba, perfectly cooked tapioca, and an array of tea from assam to oolong and everything in between.

What makes the best tea houses stand out is the HOUSE MILK. I call it Asian milk because it’s a way to make the milk so it’s creamy, malty, and has more depth of flavor and texture.

It’s more than just milk. The experts use a combo of milks and that’s the secret.

Make a batch at home and watch out… your drinks are going to be soooo good!

Let’s go!

What is Asian Milk

Asian milk is the sweet, creamy milk base and house milk mixture that is added to coffee drinks, matcha lattes, boba and bubble tea drinks, and milk tea. It is a creamier pre-made mixture of milk, condensed milk, and cream, all essential to Asian milky beverages that are more sophisticated and layered in flavor.

This recipe is my Asian milk mixture that will take your drinks at home next level, like you just came from the tea shop.

Asian milk is best as the recipe below, but is also versatile with some additions and variations I included.

Ingredients

Yield: about 2 cups

  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
The base that keeps everything smooth and balanced
  • 1/2 cup condensed milk
Adds sweetness and malty, creamy richness familiar with Asian cuisine.
  • 4 tbsp half and half
Gives it that extra silky, slightly thicker texture

Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Spoon or whisk
  • Glass mason jar with airtight lid

Instructions

  1. Add whole milk, condensed milk, and half and half to a saucepan.
  2. Place over low heat and warm for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    • This blends all the ingredients together perfectly.
  3. Do not let it simmer or boil. You just want everything fully combined and smooth.
  4. Remove from heat and let it cool completely. Stir after cooled.
  5. Pour into a glass mason jar with an airtight lid and enjoy. Refrigerate leftovers.

Add-Ins and Variations

  • Add a splash of vanilla extract for a softer flavor
  • Mix in a little honey for extra sweetness
  • Add a pinch of salt to balance and enhance flavor
  • Use evaporated milk instead of whole milk for bolder richness.
  • Add a little coconut milk for a subtle tropical note.
  • Try Hokkaido milk for an extra creamy flavor profile.

Storage and Leftovers

Store in an airtight glass container in the fridge for up to 6 days.

Shake or stir before using, as slight separation is normal.

Do not freeze, as the texture may change.

FAQs

Can I skip heating it?
No. Gently heating helps everything fully combine, especially the condensed milk, and it enhances flavor.

Is this very sweet?
It’s sweet, but balanced. You can adjust by adding more or less condensed milk.

Can I use low-fat milk?
You can, but whole milk gives the best creamy texture.

What’s the difference between this and regular milk?
This is a pre-sweetened, richer milk blend designed for drinks, so you don’t have to add sugar each time. It adds texture and flavor for cafe style milk tea and drinks at home.

Can I use this for hot drinks?
Yes! Heat, froth, and add to hot coffee and tea drinks.
