A Dinner Favorite for Busy Weeknights
When I am in the thick of things all day long (hello mom life), quick recipes are my rescue — and miso honey salmon is one of my go-to lifesavers.
I love making salmon in this manner because it’s foolproof, with such a tender, flaky, and satisfying outcome every single time. It’s definitely on my weekday-style recipe rotation.
I’m always cooking with miso too! Miso glazed eggplant, miso glazed chicken thighs, and Japanese miso dressing are all on rotation.
Salmon is one of those fish that should not be overcooked, and not every restaurant can hit that mark. That perfectly moist, just-set center makes all the difference.
So here it is — a way to prepare oven miso honey salmon that is so simple, you can make it perfectly straight from your own home oven and serve it immediately, no waiting required.
While going out and ordering miso salmon at The Cheesecake Factory is a fun treat, there’s something peaceful and comforting about home-cooked goodness.
Besides, at home there’s far less chance of the salmon sitting out, drying up, or overcooking in its own residual heat. You control the timing — and that’s how you get perfectly tender salmon every time.

This miso salmon recipe is especially a versatile choice because it can be adjusted for amounts you need to serve, and each ingredient is available in most pantries.
No sake or dashi or mirin or wines…it’s just straight ingredients that mostly everyone has today, with exception of miso paste (which can be found at most Asian grocery stores or online).
What is Honey Miso Salmon
Miso honey salmon is a simple oven-baked salmon dish glazed with a savory-sweet mixture of miso paste and honey.
The miso adds deep umami richness, while the honey balances it with natural sweetness, creating a beautifully caramelized, glossy finish.
When baked just right, the salmon turns tender and flaky, with a flavorful glaze that soaks perfectly into rice or vegetables.
What is Miso Paste?
Miso paste is widely seen as a Japanese staple ingredient, and if you have not discovered miso paste and begun using it in your recipes, now is the time.
I have tried so many kinds of sauces and spices, nothing matches miso. Everyone needs some miso paste in their fridge if Asian recipes with miso come up often.
In a nutshell, miso paste is made from fermented soybeans with salt (along with other things and mixes of barley, rice, buckwheat, rye, etc.). It has myriad health benefits from probiotics, protein, and vitamins.
Miso creates a flavor sensation that is very sought for in many Japanese and Asian cuisines…savory, salty, earthy, sweet…umami.

When miso is added to the blank canvas of salmon, not to mention soups and other proteins, it transforms into something elevated, sensory, and with tongue-hugging umami flavor. This can be done with little to no effort.
A little goes a long way. A small spoon of miso can be easily mixed with other ingredients from honey to vinegar, and will change your dish (soup, salad dressing, sauce, marinades) to something more noticeable.
Miso is an ideal accompaniment for fatty fish like black cod and salmon.

Ingredients for honey Miso Salmon
- Salmon Filet
- The star of the dish. Choose a fresh, firm salmon filet with vibrant color and good marbling. Salmon is naturally rich in healthy omega-3 fats and becomes tender and flaky when cooked properly, making it perfect for absorbing bold glazes like miso honey.
- Miso Paste
- Miso is a fermented soybean paste that delivers deep umami flavor — savory, slightly salty, and complex. It gives the salmon that signature Japanese-inspired richness and helps create depth without needing extra butter or heavy sauces.
- Honey
- Honey balances the saltiness of the miso with natural sweetness. It also helps the glaze caramelize in the oven, creating a glossy finish and subtle golden edges on the salmon.
- Low Sodium Soy Sauce
- Soy sauce enhances the umami flavor and rounds out the glaze. Using low sodium keeps the dish from becoming overly salty while still adding that classic savory depth.
- Black and White Toasted Sesame Seeds (Garnish)
- These add a light crunch and nutty aroma. The combination of black and white seeds also gives the finished dish a beautiful, restaurant-style presentation.
- Scallions (Garnish)
- Freshly sliced scallions add brightness and a mild onion flavor that cuts through the richness of the glaze. They bring freshness, color, and balance to every bite.

Instructions how to make Miso Honey Salmon
Preheat the oven to 400 F
- Clean and pat dry your salmon filet.
- In a small bowl, mix the miso paste, honey, soy sauce. It should be creamy and pasty.
- Rub it all over the salmon top and sides, leave the bottom alone.
- Have a nice Dutch oven or cast iron oven pan and lightly drizzle some avocado oil.
- Next, place the salmon on top in one action. Once placed, do not move it around so the oil stays still underneath.
- Put the salmon in the oven, middle rack, for 10 minutes (based on a 1 pound salmon filet). Adjust time per thickness of the oven pan.
- After ten minutes, change oven setting to broil and continue for five last minutes.
- Remove the salmon and let it rest so it continues to cook through to just right. It will be sizzling on the sides as the natural oils of the salmon add to the sauce. The honey miso glazed salmon should be browned on top.
- Lastly, top with the sesame seeds and scallions.
Best Tips for Perfect Miso Honey Salmon
- Do not overcook the salmon. Salmon continues cooking from residual heat after it comes out of the oven. Remove it when the center is just slightly translucent for the most tender, flaky texture.
- Pat the salmon dry first. This helps the miso honey glaze adhere better and caramelize properly.
- Use room temperature salmon. Let it sit out for 10–15 minutes before baking for more even cooking.
- Line your baking sheet. Use parchment paper or foil for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
- Broil briefly at the end (optional). A quick 1–2 minute broil can help caramelize the honey and deepen the glaze — just watch carefully so it doesn’t burn.
- Don’t oversalt. Miso and soy sauce already contain salt, so additional salt is usually unnecessary.
Add-Ins and Variations
- Garlic or fresh grated ginger – Adds warmth and depth to the glaze.
- Spicy version – Add sriracha, sambal oelek, or red pepper flakes for heat.
- Maple syrup instead of honey – Creates a slightly deeper, earthy sweetness.
- Air fryer miso honey salmon bites – Cook at 375°F for about 9 minutes depending on thickness.
- Grilled miso honey salmon – Perfect for summer; brush glaze on during the final minutes of grilling.
- Miso honey salmon bowls – Serve over rice with cucumber, shredded carrots, and avocado for a balanced meal.
Storage and Leftovers
- Refrigerate: Store leftover miso honey salmon in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Reheat gently: Warm in a 300°F oven for 8–10 minutes or microwave in short intervals to avoid drying it out.
- Avoid overheating: Overheating will make salmon dry and tough.
- Cold option: Leftover salmon is delicious flaked cold over crunch salads, Asian caesar salad, or mixed into rice bowls.
How to Serve Miso Honey Salmon
- Serve over steamed white rice or brown rice to soak up the glaze.
- Pair with garlic sautéed green beans, bok choy, or roasted broccoli.
- Add a simple cucumber salad for freshness and crunch.
- Make it a complete salmon rice bowl with rice, salmon, avocado, shredded cabbage, and sesame seeds.
- Serve alongside miso soup for a comforting, restaurant-style meal at home.
