I commonly use latik as a garnishing for various Filipino sweets and desserts.

HOW TO MAKE Latik

To make this easy latik recipe, follow these simple steps:

  1. Prepare the Coconut Cream: In a pan, pour 2 cups of regular, unsweetened coconut cream.
  2. Simmer the Coconut Cream: Over low to medium heat, simmer the coconut cream while continuously stirring with a wooden spoon.
  3. Watch for Changes: As the coconut cream simmers, it will gradually separate into coconut oil and latik. Continuously stir to prevent burning and to ensure even toasting.
  4. Toast Until Golden: Continue stirring and toasting until the coconut curds turn golden brown. The resulting latik should be crispy, crunchy, and a little chewy.
  5. Strain and Cool: Once the latik reaches the desired color and texture, remove it from the heat. Strain the latik to separate it from the coconut oil and let it cool.
  6. Use or Store: Your homemade latik is now ready to be used as a topping for various Asian desserts and dishes, or it can be stored for later use.

One of my favorite recipes is biko with latik for a sweet, rich, and sticky dessert, made with coconut rice and brown sugar…a total crowd pleaser.

For an easier recipe idea, I use latik as sprinkles over ube, vanilla, or dulce de leche ice cream! So sarap!!

  • Pour coconut cream into a non stick pan over low medium heat.

  • Bring to a simmer. Stir often. Watch the coconut oil separate from the coconut curds. Keep stirring.
