What Is Asian Cooking?

Asian cooking is a broad term that includes the traditional cuisines of countries like Japan, China, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, and many others.

While each cuisine has its own unique flavors and cooking techniques, many recipes share common ingredients and a focus on fresh, natural flavors.

Instead of relying on heavily processed seasonings, many Asian dishes are built around everyday ingredients like onion, garlic, ginger, tomatoes, chilies, soy sauce, rice, noodles, and fresh vegetables—all easy to find at your local grocery store.

Many Asian cuisines developed in islands, rural villages, and remote regions where cooks learned to make incredible meals using local ingredients and simple pantry staples. That resourcefulness is still at the heart of Asian cooking today.

With just a few basic ingredients and aromatics, you’ll be making delicious homemade Asian meals in no time.

Plus, small bowls are handy for sauces and sauce making.

  • Large wok or skillet – Perfect for stir-fries, fried rice, noodles, and sautéing vegetables.
  • Rice cooker – Makes fluffy rice every time with little effort.
  • Sharp chef’s knife and a good cutting board – Great for slicing vegetables, herbs, and proteins quickly and safely.
  • Cutting board – A sturdy cutting board makes meal prep easier.
  • Little bowls – Useful for preparing small amounts of sauces, marinades, and dressings… and also for side sauces at the table for using as dips.
  • Tongs or Chopsticks – Ideal for tossing noodles, stir-fries, and vegetables. These help the noodles to not break or get mushy… unlike when using a spatula.
  • Wooden spoon or spatula – Gentle on cookware and perfect for stir-frying.
