Milkshakes are amazing. They are at the top of ultimate desserts, and it’s needless to say that kids go wild for an ice cream milkshake.

The violet purple of this shake and the easy blend of ice cream and all natural ube halaya, in my eyes, elevates the whole milkshake thing.

It’s fun and reminds me of childhood, but there is a little sophistication of not too sweet ube jam mixed into some French vanilla that is really a dessert dream.

Make time to sit and enjoy this, because a good milkshake, is a thick milkshake.

An ube milkshake needs to be Thick. Thic. Thhic. Thicc.

What is Ube Halaya?

ube halaya piled high in mason glass jars

Ube halaya is the main base ingredient for many ube-based desserts and pastries.

Essentially, it is ube (powdered or frozen purple yam from the Philippines) that has been mixed and thickened with coconut milk and condensed milk.

It is often called ube halaya or ube jam.

It’s so easy to make and has a sweet, nutty, earthy, and vanilla essence to the flavor. Sometimes, ube extract is added for more flavor and deep purple color.

You can easily make ube halaya and with that, you’ll be set for making an ube milkshake whenever you want to.

Best thing is, ube halaya can be put in the freezer and it stays soft. You can cut any amount you like and if you have leftover ube halaya, that is the best for making this milkshake recipe.

Notes

  • Soften your ube halaya so it mixes well. A few seconds in the microwave works well.
  • Add the ingredients little by little and pulse in the blender to ensure the best blending.
  • Use quality vanilla ice cream for the best flavor.

Add Ins and Variations

  • blend with some ice and more milk for a more slushie vibe
  • use more ube halaya for extra ube taste
  • use French Vanilla ice cream (contains egg) or Vanilla Bean ice cream for the best and most rich flavor
  • add lots of toppings for a very instagram worthy ube milkshake
  • top with young coconut shreds
  • add in tapioca pearls
  • make avocado milkshake first, then layer with ube milkshake on top for the best of two worlds in one
