Jollibee as a Filipino American
As a Filipino American, I’ve had plenty of Jollibee in my life and a few pictures of myself with the mascot. In fact, whenever I visit the Philippines, it’s one of the places I just have to go to. Luckily, I have a Jollibee within a few miles of me to satisfy my fried chicken cravings or when I have some guests over.
Speaking of, I always am proud to mention..”oh this is from Jollibee a Filipino place!” So you see, it’s so much more…it’s the representation.
Americans have KFC, Filipinos have Jollibee. I am happy I have both in my arsenal of memories. I have a childhood that can remember both chains well, but Jollibee wasn’t just about food. It was about connection and pride.
I think that is why there is such sentiment over how people feel about Jollibee. You don’t have to love it or love every item on the menu, these days I eat less fast food actually. However, for most Filipinos and especially mixed ones like myself, it’s one of those places that connects you and transports you to the Philippines just a little.
That sliver of a bridge, that connection, some familiar tastes…these are IMPORTANT when there is that atmosphere of disconnect. Especially in the melting pot of Los Angeles and amongst the diversity of the United States, where between homesickness or just wanting to feel closer to your roots, you can eat out at Jollibee and surprisingly feel closer to parts of who you are.

The chicken joy is a no brainer and peach mango pies are a dessert that are much better than the MC D’s apple pie (sorry, not sorry). I actually love a Sunday brunch with some fresh homemade salads and a bucket of the chicken joy to share with family and friends…it’s my balance and not to mention, yummy!
